I'm going to Nha Trang in about a month. I've never been to SEA before - most of my trips have been to the Caribbean, mostly Cuba. I've rented scooters on more than 20 trips and put thousands of km on them so I have some experience.

I searched the forum but haven't found much info. Are they common in Nha Trang? Do you need more than a Canadian drivers license? Any scams I should be aware of or are they reasonably straight forward. Any overnight parking issues? One destination mentioned in this post Most hotels/guesthouses and traveller cafes can arrange bike/scooter rental for you, and it's a great way to get out of Nha Trang and explore the surrounding countryside (which is beautiful). In theory you need to have a VNese drivers' licence, in practice very few people have and you're highly unlikely to get stopped unless you have an accident. Overnight parking - if you're renting a scooter for several days your hotel will be able to accommodate it overnight. This is a motorbike country and every building, however humble, has space for at least 2-3 bikes! We've hired bikes all over Asia and Vietnam without an issue, and like you are experienced riders. Most hire places will give you a chain and lock for the bike and as mentioned all guesthouses have some parking for bikes.

Happy & safe travelsAny idea about prices? I would really like to explore the countryside a bit while I'm there and I'd much rather do it on my own than in a taxi. I really think you need to investigate this a little further - are you aware that people drive in this country like no place on earth? There are no lanes, directional signs are ignored, and the number of motorbike accidents/deaths in VN must be in the thousands every year (probably tens of thousands!) Do your research before the trip, or it might well be your last trip. Most places charge around $6-$7 per day for bike rental, with discounts for longer rentals. As Daawgon says, you will need your wits about you - the traffic here is insane, especially on highways. Stick to quiet country roads though and you'll generally be OK, but be aware that a) VNese drivers are the most inconsiderate and impatient on the planet, and b) as a foreigner, if you get into an accident it's your fault even when it isn't.

Also note that your insurance WON'T cover you unless you have a VNese drivers' licence, so that adds another element of risk.

motorcycle sales yeovil As Daawgon noted, make sure that your travel insurance company will cover you without a Vietnamese licence, even though you are licensed in your home country.

Unfortunately when we had our accident in April, we were not covered. Luckily there was no 3rd party to contend with, except the damage to the bike - this was a cost + hubby's 2 operations since then. We should have said we came of a bicycle LOL!!!! I'm pretty sure that it may take some time for you to get used to the local driving style first before you may decide to drive on your own. Every small lane is packed with people and their motorbikes and traffic lights are routinely ignored. And you definitely need a valid license in here but honestly many, including myself don't have one. Thanks for all the feedback. I'll see how things are before I jump into it, but I assumed that Nha Trang wouldn't be that hectic. Nha Trang probably doesn't compare to HCMC. But the riders everywhere don't think twice about launching themselves into the traffic flow, from both side of the road, They don't look, it's up to you to avoid hitting them. Phone calls and texting is done on the move and if they really want to talk, they will just suddenly stop, without any thought about what is coming along behind and talk!

As for red lights, I think a lot of Vietnamese should have eyesights checks, especially for colour blindness! Accident rates are very high. When I first visited Vn as a tourist I was amazed how few accidents i saw but now I see it was an illusion. I see on average 4 - 5 collisions a day easily. The only saving grace is that in the cities, traffic speeds are low. -:- Message from TripAdvisor staff -:-This topic has been closed to new posts due to inactivity.
