Three RC regulars discuss the pros and cons of modern riding gear... I am trying to discover what the word 'waterproof' means to the average purchaser of motorcycling apparel.

I own a couple of jackets, a fairly new Belstaff and a ten year old Weises, trousers by Furygan and Buffalo, and boots by Frank Thomas and Red Coyote. They qualify as 'shower proof', but waterproof? In anything like a downpour I'm wet through in 15 minutes. The Frank Thomas Aqua boots are the second replacement pair. All three pairs have leaked. With the Red Coyote boots I get wet feet walking through wet grass. The average cost of the three items is around 400 (and can be a lot more) whereas with a pair of Wellingtons and an ex-army cape I could be dry for a tenner. In the 1950s I had a Barbour suit which I wore to work every day for 15 years without getting wet. Is the poor quality of modern gear due to their manufacture in China or Korea or wherever? At the prices charged, the boots should be made in Northampton and the jackets and trousers in Saville Row. Somebody must have found some decent gear or we would ALL be like drowned rats. I do have some useful experience in this area after spending several seasons exposed to the elements for ten to 12 hours a day.

Total water-resistance used to be provided by plastics (and before them, those lovely wax cotton garments of which traditionalists are so fond, and which tend to smell of wet dog within six months). Rukka oversuits were totally waterproof until the fabric was broken - but they offered no crash protection whatsoever. Even Rukkas allowed water ingress at the cuffs and up from the waist, and through the zip areas after eight or nine hours in the wet. Seepage is the enemy: often a garment isn't leaking but water is being blown or tracks up from glove / legging joints. And of course Rukkas kept all moisture in as well as keeping moisture out, so in summer showers they turned into a sauna. Modern kit is intended to be breathable, avoiding the latter problem. However the breathable membrane appears to be extremely susceptible to small, invisible damage. Once the membrane is broken then the garment becomes instantly unwaterproof. So it was that Frank's Bering jacket stayed waterproof for a decade, but mine leaked like a sieve in (only!) four or five years.

We have both found that Alt-Berg boots, made in England, are decently water resistant; good for a six hour soaking. I've been wearing my Alt-bergs for 16 years (not all the time, you understand; occasionally I switch to carpet slippers) and give them a new coat of dubbin each year. However, they are made to measure, which contributes to their efficacy, and you may have to travel to Yorkshire to be fitted for a pair. If everything was easy, then how would we entertain ourselves? I too used to have the traditional Belstaff waxed cotton suit and don't miss it for a moment. It was cold in cold weather, very hot and smelly in the occasional weekend of 'summer' and became stiff as a board when it got wet. I did have the misfortune to make a small rip in the right arm near the shoulder. On a rainy ride over the Hog's Back in Surrey the sleeve filled with water from elbow to shoulder. My gran cried with laughter when I got to her house, took off my glove and poured out the tepid mess.

I was given a nylon/cordura jacket when I bought my next bike and immediately put the Belstaff suit into a charity shop. The luxury of a jacket that was warm as well as dry! After a lot of commuting in all weathers I discovered an arrangement that worked for me. This was to wear the usual bike gear and then top it with a very large walker's cagoule. Neither bike jacket nor cagoule were good enough on their own, but the big outer jacket took the brunt of the direct rain, leaving the inner jacket to cope with seepage. And as the cagoule was long enough to sit on I overcame the creeping icy finger in the crotch that befalls all bike trousers. I did start the arrangement with a cheap set of PVC trousers and jacket sold for golfers, but a brisk ride turned them into a grass skirt and cape. Golfers obviously don't move fast enough to get their PVC flapping. I moved on to a proper mountaineer's Helly Hansen cagoule, made in the days when they were purposeful rather than fashionable.

This and a pair of wellies served me for years. Since then I have discovered an even better solution - a fairing. The clothing has changed though, to match the needs of commuting. This winter I've been using an old pair of East European jackboots made waterproof with Nikwax plus a one-piece waterproof oversuit. This is topped with a big yellow 'road worker's' jacket with all the reflective stripes. The ensemble is quick to get on and off, fits over work clothes and has been both dry and (behind the fairing) just a tad too warm. It also has a strange calming effect on car drivers when they see a big faired bike in the mirror with Dayglo-yellow rider. The strange thing now is that I have more problems with hot weather than cold. I struggled last summer to find a combination of clothing that offered at least a little impact protection, that would fit over or combine with work clothing, and that wasn't like wearing a wet suit in a sauna. I've settled on a mesh jacket for the top but the down side to riding this bike is the amount of heat it puts out round the rider's legs.
