The frame was bolstered by X-ing and featured a complete complement of items, making it race ready. Is it a kit car or a race car? Well, truth be known it’s both! Designed to be economical enough for the local racer to afford yet high tech enough for the professional racer to want to drive, this Mopar kit race car was initially available from the legendary NASCAR team Petty Enterprises. The concept was born out of Mopar’s involvement in NASCAR and really gained legs when the Chrysler Corporation exited the sanctioning body in the early ’70s.
One of the key proponents of the program was Larry Rathgeb, who had previously been Chyrsler’s Director of Race Programs. Rathgeb and his engineering team settled on a 1972 Dodge Challenger body to cloak some pretty advanced technology for the time period. The car you see here is thought to be the prototype or one of the prototypes for that program.© Provided by Hotrod The racing seat, sans headrest, shows it to be mounted just as it was in the early ’70s, bolted to the upper and lower rollcage bars. The concept of the program was to provide a kit that was easy to assemble with everything fitting together seamlessly, thereby eliminating the need to scour junkyards for parts. This enabled the inexperienced driver to become competitive in a much shorter time period. The kit used an interesting combination of parts that included front framerails coming from an E-Body (Dodge Challenger) and the rear from an A-Body (Dodge Dart/Demon). As a short track car, it would earn the name “Saturday Night Special.”
During development, the car was tested on dirt by a young and then-struggling North Carolina racer by the name of Dale Earnhardt Sr. NASCAR star Pete Hamilton handled the testing duties on the pavement. While Petty initially offered the car, as the program moved along you could also purchase the racer from any Chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth dealer. Depending upon the size of your bank account, the car could be purchased in any one of four states of completion; a basic chassis, a rolling chassis, a complete car less the sheetmetal, or the complete/turnkey car.Unfortunately, the program never met the company’s expectations and only about 30 factory complete cars were delivered to buyers. While they also delivered close to 100 of the other three options, it wasn’t enough to keep the kit car program alive. That, however, does not negate the importance of the innovative nature of the concept.© Provided by Hotrod One aspect of the car that is still used today is the exhaust location with both pipes on the lower left side to lessen the noise and fumes, directing them away from the crowd.
ResurrectionBrian Skanes of Lexington, Kentucky, is a real master in re-covering and restoring ’60s and ’70s stock cars. One of his earlier efforts was restoring the 1970 T/A Challenger that was driven by Sam Posey in the Trans-Am Series. With this kit car it was a series of events that came together that allowed Skanes to bring this so-called “mule” car back to life.“It all started in 1985 when I saw the car for sale in a local magazine,” he recalls. “It was described as a ‘Mopar factory car’ and the seller wanted $4,000 for it. I thought it was too much and let it go. At that time it was re-bodied as a Mirada but was still in pretty good shape.”© Provided by Hotrod This was the standard four-barrel carb, which came equipped with NASCAR bowls. The M/T you see on the valve covers stand for Mickey Thompson—creating that true vintage look. Several years passed and the car resurfaced. “In 1989, it came back up on the market for $500. Some kid had driven it on dirt tracks and it was not as competitive as it had once been.
At the time it carried the same Dodge Mirada body.” So Skanes snapped it up and began a long six-year restoration effort, which resulted in the perfection shown by these photos. During the restoration, Skanes was informed by the second owner that the car was indeed one of the prototypes. He also learned that the car won an ARCA race in 1980 while sporting a Dart body, emblematic of another Mopar kit car project of the same era.© Provided by Hotrod Skanes was careful to re-create the exact decal design as what came on the car. “It was also reported that country music star/NASCAR driver Marty Robbins had once driven the car,” Skanes says. “I learned things about the car like that as I was in the process of acquiring many of the original parts that had since been removed. Fortunately, those superrare Petty wheels came along with the deal.” Not much has changed over the years when it comes to window supports. The original goal of increasing Chrysler’s presence in short track racing while providing the racer an alternative to homebuilt, junkyard cars, didn’t pan out like the Mopar execs wanted but the car still commands a great deal of attention and interest anywhere it goes.
